Self-aligning Ball Bearing Operation Method

Feb 20, 2026 Leave a message

A self-aligning ball bearing is a rolling bearing with self-aligning properties. Its design features a spherical outer ring raceway and two opposing raceways on the inner ring. Together with the cage and rolling elements, they form an assembly that automatically adjusts its center position.

This structure allows the self-aligning ball bearing to maintain smooth operation during installation or operation, even if there is a certain axial or radial misalignment between the shaft and the bearing housing. The automatic adjustment of the rolling elements reduces additional stress caused by misalignment, thereby extending the service life of the bearing and the entire mechanical system.

Application Scenarios and Installation Methods
Self-aligning ball bearings are widely used in applications requiring radial loads and where slight misalignment may occur, such as textile machinery, papermaking machinery, fans, pumps, and drive shafts. Installation is relatively simple, but the following points should be noted:

Cleaning and Inspection: Before installation, thoroughly clean the bearing housing, shaft, and bearing itself to remove oil and impurities, and inspect the bearing for damage or defects.

Installation Direction: Ensure that the bearing's markings match the installation requirements, especially for bearings with specific installation direction requirements.

Tools Used: It is recommended to use specialized bearing installation tools, such as sleeves and presses, to avoid direct impact on the bearing and potential damage.

Preload Control: Control the preload appropriately according to the bearing specifications and application requirements. Too tight a preload will increase friction, while too loose a preload will affect bearing stability.

Lubrication: After installation, select a suitable lubricant based on the bearing type and working environment to reduce friction and wear.

Operation and Maintenance: During operation, the self-aligning ball bearing requires regular checks of its operating status, including temperature, noise, vibration, and the cleanliness and quantity of the lubricant. If any abnormalities are found, stop the machine immediately for inspection and troubleshooting. Additionally, change the lubricant periodically according to the bearing's usage and the manufacturer's recommendations to maintain good lubrication.
